Practical Parenting Tip #46: A little apathy goes a long way.

Scene: The 3 and 4 year-old room at Crowbar's daycare. Crowbar is playing house with several little kids when a girl accidentally bumps into him, knocking him off balance. He falls.

Girl: Sorry. (Goes to help him up.)

Crowbar: 'Sorry' doesn't pay the bills.

Girl cries.

End scene.

I feel somewhat responsible for the scene described above.

Yes, Mark and I have been known to say, "Sorry doesn't pay the bills," to the kids now and again, but in our defense, we've got an epidemic of empty sorries getting littered around our house.

C'mon, you know what I'm talking about: Saying sorry without actually being sorry.

It happens a lot. And in my parenting guide, "The Apathetic Parent's Guide to Raising Resilient Kids," dismissing the insincere sorry from time to time is a wholly acceptable practice.

But it's only effective if your daycare provider has a sense of humor.

"Sorry doesn't pay the bills" may become a new catchphrase at Casa de Davis. That's freakin' awesome!
When I was a kid- it was "If you were sorry you wouldn't have done it in the first place" often followed up by "Yes- you are sorry, aren't you?" Good times.

Nice!

Tonight, one of the girls dropped something and said, "Whoops, it was an accident."

Crowbar responded in a creepy, robotic-sounding voice, "There's no such thing as an accident."

He wigged me out a little.
